From Homeless to Hero: One Women's Story

Monica’s decision to join the Navy was simple: she was homeless and living in her broken down 95’ Ford Escort. Winter was coming and she had no food, and no job.  Sadly, this wasn’t the first time Monica had been homeless, but this was the first time she was homeless… and starving.  

Within a few weeks, Monica was an official Naval Recruit and on her way to Great Lakes, Illinois.  While most people were complaining about being in boot camp, she was grateful to be cared for and fed.

Life After Military Service Bring Familiar Troubles

After her service, Monica faced poverty once again, only this time, she had military benefits on her side.  She was able to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and is now finishing up a Master's Degree Program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Oakland University.

that same value in the lives of my students."

Using Life Experience to Serve Others

Now, Monica works with students who find themselves in emergency situations; who better than her to connect them with resources that will enable them to be successful in school.  Monica is engaged and a mother of two active boys.
